Tolworth O Gauge Group & MSC Models

Tolworth O Gauge Group has a small, but active, membership whose railway interests are varied. They are always looking for new members who want to learn or would like to contribute to the group. MSC Models have been selling a range of motors and gearboxes for nearly 40 years, principally for Gauge 0 and Gauge 1 locomotives. Our units are simple to fit and are designed to “free float” in the chassis as the gear mesh is already set within the gearbox – just replace the dummy axle in the final gear drive with the appropriate wheel axle.

Hintock Branch

John Flann was born and raised in Hook and went to Tiffins Grammar School and could so easily have become a member of this club. But after the call of National Service he found a job and digs elsewhere and moved away. He now resides in the USA, in northern Utah, where the skies are big and the snow deep. He is a keen modeller and has had several layouts featured in the model press. Owlcombe, Dunnock Edge, Barley Dean, and Melbury to name a few. The most recent, Hintock Quay appears in the December 2014 Railway Modeller. John also models in American HO with his Providence River branch featuring in the press as well.

To remind himself of home, and of one of his favorite counties, John has created Hintock and Hintock Quay. This is a small but quite remarkable 4mm scale layout with a very believable back story. Set in GWR territory with running rights for the Southern and S&D Railways.

John's website, built with the aid of his son Christopher, explains how he built it, it's history and his ingenious way of making up freight trains. This website is well worth a look at and has some wonderful pictures of a past long gone. More of Hintock and Hintock Quay can be seen on RMWeb.

Bluebell Railway logoThe Bluebell Railway is a heritage line running for 11 mi (17.7 km) along the border between East and West Sussex, England. It uses steam trains which operate between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead, with intermediate stations at Horsted Keynes & Kingscote.

The first preserved standard gauge steam-operated passenger railway in the world to operate a public service, the Society ran its first train on 7 August 1960, less than three years after the line from East Grinstead to Lewes had been closed by British Railways.

The Mid-Hants Railway ( The Watercress Line)

Mid Hants Railway logoThe Mid Hants Railway, affectionately known as the ‘Watercress Line’ due to its connection with transporting watercress from the beds in Alresford all the way in to London. This heritage railway was saved from total extinction by a band of enthusiastic volunteers in 1973. They raised enough money to re-open the line as a visitor attraction from Alresford to Ropley in 1977 and continued to raise funds to relay the track to join up with the South West Trains station at Alton by 1985, with its own station buildings on Platform 3. They operate a fleet of steam locomotives, most of them of the larger classes, as they are required to work hard to haul trains up and over the steeply graded line. Today the railway runs the full 10 miles between the market towns of Alresford and Alton, preserving an important piece of our 1940’s – 70’s railway heritage for this generation and many more to follow.
